Witcher 3 Cant Continue Quest Well
The world of The Witcher 3proves that nothing is ever either black or white. Throughout the game, Geralt does his best to remain neutral but he has to make difficult decisions more than once. And the way he decides has the power to forever change the lives of his friends, as well as other people he comes across... for better or for worse.
That's also the case of the side quest Where the Cat and Wolf Play... which is one of the more complicated side quests in the game. It takes place in Velen and it starts as a seemingly normal contract for Geralt - only to become something much more complicated later on.
What To Do Before
The quest Where the Cat and Wolf Play ... is one of the quests that depends on completing a previous quest - otherwise it won't start. In this case, Geralt needs to pick up the contract The Beast of Honorton. He can do so either in Crow's Perch or Oreton where he'll find the contract on the notice board.
Once Geralt starts the quest, he should go to Honorton. He discovers the village is empty and there are a lot of dead bodies in it. Geralt comes across a few necrophages, and should kill them. He then investigates the village to learn what happened and whether it was the monster from the contract that killed the villagers or something - someone - else.
The Start Of The Quest
Once Geralt deals with the necrophages, The Beast of Honorton ends, and Where the Cat and Wolf Play... starts. While Geralt investigates one of the huts, he sees a little girl running off. He should find her doll outside the hut. He'll also find the girl's footprints and should follow them to find the scared child.
Geralt finds the girl hiding behind a large tree but she'll be scared of him. He can either win her trust by giving her the doll or he can use the Axii sign to calm the girl. Either way, she'll eventually tell Geralt the truth about what happened in the village. Another witcher came, killed the monster for the villagers, but then murdered all of them, with the exception of the girl.
Searching For The Second Witcher
Once Geralt knows what happened to the villagers and who's responsible for their deaths, he can try and track the second witcher down. The tracks lead him to a witcher named Gaetan. Geralt also finds Gaetan's witcher amulet on the road and he gives it to Gaetan. He then has a choice. He can ask Gaetan what happened in the village.
If he asks, Gaetan will tell Geralt that the villagers tried to cheat him out of his money after he had killed the monster - a leshen - for them. And when he tried to get his money, they attacked him with a pitchfork and hurt him.
Gaetan then grew furious and killed them all - with the exception of the little girl, Millie, whom he spared because she reminded him of his sister when she was a child. Geralt also learns that Gaetan's sister died a few years back.
Alternatively, Geralt can ignore Gaetan's story. The end of their meeting will also depend on Geralt's choice. He can decide to spare Gaetan or try to kill him.
Geralt Spares Gaetan
If Geralt spares Gaetan, the witcher from the school of the Cat will be pleasantly surprised. He'll want to reward Geralt for his understanding, and tells him where he stashed his treasure and old trophies. That will start the additional quest Take What You Want. However, Geralt should only undertake the quest after he's finished the current one.
Also, if Geralt decides not to kill the other witcher, he'll never meet him again - so the player doesn't have to worry about their possible future encounter.
Geralt Kills Gaetan
Geralt can also decide that what Gaetan had done to the villagers is unforgivable. In that case, there are two variations to the fight between them.
In one case, Geralt allows Gaetan to drink the Swallow healing potion to give him a chance to defend himself in the fight. If Geralt allows this, Gaetan will try to trick him and throws a bomb at Geralt that will temporarily blind him. This will make the fight more difficult for Geralt.
Another option is to not let Gaetan take the Swallow potion and fight him the way he is. He will still use witcher signs against Geralt which can make the fight challenging for players only accustomed to fighting monsters and humans, not other witchers.
Once Geralt kills Gaetan, he can loot his body and gets the witcher's sword. The player will also receive 200 experience points.
Millie's Fate
Before Geralt can go on his merry way, he should help Millie who's still hiding behind the tree where Geralt told her to wait. Millie reveals that her aunt lives in Oreton. Geralt will take Millie to the village. When they arrive, the aunt won't be too happy to see them as times are tough and she already has kids to take care of.
Geralt can then choose to give the old woman 40 crowns which will earn him 4 experience points. If he gives her money, the aunt will be kinder to Millie and she'll promise to make pancakes for the girl.
A Second Meeting
The quest will end after Geralt says goodbye to Millie. However, he can visit the girl once again to see how she's doing. If he goes to Oreton a few days later, Millie will be waiting for him. She'll greet him and give him a small gift - a drawing of herself and Geralt.
What Not To Do
If Geralt strays away too far from Millie after he kills or spares Gaetan, the quest will fail. Geralt should first accompany Millie to her aunt and then he can proceed with the quest Take What You Want if he spared Gaetan.
Both of the quests - The Beast of Honorton and Where the Cat and Wolf Play... are level 25 so it's best for the player to wait and level up before Geralt starts the quests.
